How does the Inc 5000 ranking work?

To be eligible for consideration for the Inc 5000 list in 2016, a company must:

  • Have generated revenue by March 31, 2012
  • Have 2012 revenue of at least $100,000
  • Have 2015 revenue of at least $2 million
  • Be a privately-held, for-profit, US-based company
  • Be an independent company (not a subsidiary or division of another company)

After a company submits its application, it must also verify its revenue numbers - either through a verification form, audit, or tax return. This means Inc's published revenue numbers are pretty reliable.

Inc then ranks the applicants by annual percent revenue growth over the past three years, honoring the top 5000 fastest-growing private companies.
